Mine turned out wonderful! thank you for the tutorial! but I do have one question. When I get to my eye, I follow the instructions but then my eye comes bout black and white, that was my only problem that I had. any ideas on how to fix it? thanks so much for your hard work on this tutorial!
for you lucas make sure that you did the step 21 right especially the Hue/Saturation thing
Nicely explained, huge thanks
This is awesome! I Avatared myself and posted it on facebook and now everyone wants to learn how to do it. I'll be sending this link out to a lot of people. Thank you :)
thank you all for your comments and thank you for adding this to facebook
The final result is awesome. It looks just like the original. I saw some avatared pics in the net but not at all good like this. Thanks for the tutorial.
Really awesome overall. Mine came out very dark and I'm not sure why. And for some reason when I changed the blend mode to color dodge in step 22 it took away the effect on the eyes, but I'm not sure if that's for some reason that I missed. Also, I would edit the tutorial to move the duplicated original to the top of the layer order in step 18 because you didn't mention it, but it's clear from later photos that you did.
thank you man for notifying and the problem was solved
for the eye effect you can make the opacity of the green eye lower to 60 or whatever work with your photo
Didnt take a whole lot of basic knowledge even. I worked with photoshop for a few weeks back in highschool 6 years ago. Today was the fist day i opened it out of the box and this was the first tutorial I chose. Easy to follow explanations and everything turned out great!
I didnt have the same font and so that was a little fun to play with, but still turned out just fine.
Thanks!
Nice tutorial.. #1 - you have to take step by step - when you get a result like this:

Hello, For some reason I have the same problem as Lucas, my eyes turned out black and white as the original photo, but not greenish/yellow as on your picture. I did this step over and over again, so I'm doing something wrong
:-(
Hi Valeriaatje i tried to now the problem but until now i didn't find it !!! but i try to find again
generally try to re follow the tutorial from step 18
any find what the problem or if has has this problem please leave a comment
Hey, this is great, but I reccomend using the liquify filter (ctrl+alt+x) and the bloat tool to enlarge the eyes and widen the nose substantially. Of course, this is only if you're going for the full Na'vi effect!
But as it is, this is great. Keep it up! Email me at cox_cory@msn.com if you have any questions about my rambling there. Haha. Peace.
hey for me this tutorial was avesome, but needed a few knowledge of photoshop:) exept one thing: you screwed up in eyes, so i had to waste half an hour for trying to make them myself... but he ret is avesome. good job!
Euhhhum Euhhhum..........
Thanks load ... nice tutorial
BTW how to make the nose a bit square like the real one???
Thx,..
:)
using the Liquify filter go to Filter>Liquify and just be creative

Great tut, however mine didn't really work out :( My eyes seems so fucked up somehow. Compared to the rest of the picture so i darkend the white instead.. Looks weird but oh well:
http://romeon.net/av.png
btw i did not quite as you showed, because i tried alot of pictures and at stage 3 where i put color burn, they all go VERY very dark..
hey nice tutorial man.... but am havin the same problem as romeo....every single picture i use goes terribly dark in step 3 (the colour burn one)....!! plzz tell me how can i resolve it...!!

once again thx a lot..:)
I keep getting stuck at the eye. I select the brush tool and set the white as foreground color. The top layer is selected. When I use the brush, I can not see that anything is being done unless I look in the layers tab and look at the little version that the eye is white, but when I continue on with the process and change the color hue, etc, it does nothing to the picture. Help! What am I doing wrong??
Nevermind. I just realized that the layer mask (black rectangle) had to be selected, as opposed to the duplicated layer (miniature of the picture).
On step 15, I chose to make my Gaussian blur much stronger (14,0) rather than 3,5. Just my personal taste.
On step 22, if I used the paint brush, it turned the white of the eye COMPLETELY white. I ended up using the eraser instead. Also, for the color dodge, I did the color dodge manually by selecting "satin" (layer>layer style>satin)and then under "color blend" selected "color dodge". Then I messed with the color to make it brighter and more yellow.
This has been great! I've had A LOT of fun with it!! Awesome, awesome!
thanks for comments and thank you MishiPhoto cause you find your self
i cant do the avatar picture id expect.. you missed some details of your work! hays...
ahhhh! mine didnt come out so good:(
I'm sorry for the mistakes and all have been solved
Okay, your bioluminescent dots are great, but I'm not sure you've taken a close enough look at Na'vi/avatar facial anatomy. Not to be too much of a stickler, but you didn't widen the bridge of the nose, add stripes, or make the tip of the nose cat-like. There's a really great example on the learnnavi.org forums, in the fan art section. Still, your blue-ification wasn't half bad, and again, the dots are better than anything I could have done.
cam u pls send me ur email ,,may be u can help me out ..mine is donkavii@yahoo.com..tanks
